Former Chairman of Ungogo Local Government Area, Engr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat, has strongly criticized the Kano State government for its silence following the deaths of four individuals during a demolition exercise in Rimin Auzinawa.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of the demolition, sparking a violent clash between residents and security operatives that resulted in fatalities.
In a statement posted on his verified Facebook handle, Ramat expressed outrage over the government’s failure to acknowledge the loss of lives.
“Almost 48 hours after this tragedy, the Kano State government remains silent—no condolences, no accountability,” Ramat wrote. “Innocent lives were lost, homes destroyed, and families left in despair—all without due process, consultation, or compensation. This is about dignity and survival, not just buildings.”
Describing the demolition as brutal and unjust, he called on the government to take responsibility.
“We condemn this brutality and demand the government provide immediate relief, take responsibility, and adopt a more humane approach to urban planning. No government should punish its citizens for its own failures,” he said.
The demolition, carried out by the Kano Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA), affected around 40 residential buildings. The disputed land reportedly belongs to Bayero University, Kano (BUK) and has been a subject of controversy for years.
Ramat urged human rights organizations, legal bodies, and the international community to take action and demand justice for the victims.
“We call on human rights organizations, legal bodies, and the international community to demand accountability and ensure such tragedies never happen again,” he added.
Government Yet to Respond
As of now, the Kano State government has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. Residents continue to call for justice, while tensions remain high in the affected community.
