CITAD, S4C, ASF France Sensitize Kano Special Needs Students on Internet Safety and Security

The Centre For Information Technology and Development (CITAD) in collaboration with Avocats Sans Frontiers (ASF France) and Spaces for Change (S4C) organized a sensitization training on Internet safety and security to students of Tudun Muliki Deaf and Blind Special Education School in Kano.

The training, supported by the European Union in Nigeria, was held on Thursday at the school.

CITAD’s Digital Rights Officer, Ali Sabo, explained that the training aimed to enlighten secondary school students on the issues of internet safety and security, cyberbullying, cyber harassment etc.

“The increase in the number of internet users in Nigeria necessitates the need to educate students on the responsible and beneficial use of online platforms and the internet,” Ali said.

CITAD has previously conducted similar sensitization sessions at other secondary schools in Kano. The organization chose Tudun Maliki Deaf and Blind Special Education School to specifically target students with disabilities, particularly those with hearing impairments.

“The selection of this school is driven by the fact that people with disabilities (PWDs) are often disproportionately affected by online safety issues, particularly cyberbullying,” Ali explained.

Ali emphasized that the training would provide students with special needs with preventive measures against online abuses and protect them from falling victim to fraudsters.

“We are committed to ensuring that all students, regardless of their abilities, have the opportunity to learn and thrive in the digital age,” Ali concluded.

The students at Tudun Maliki School of Special Education received both theoretical and practical instruction on Internet safety and security.
