Kaduna-Based Activist Denounces Proposed Cybersecurity Tax as “Digital Robbery” by Nigerian Government

Kaduna-based activist and whistleblower, Malam Mahdi Shehu, criticized the Nigerian government’s proposal to enforce a 0.5% cybersecurity levy, labeling it as “planned digital theft” orchestrated by President Buhari and associates, particularly Bola Tinubu.

Shehu voiced his objections today on his verified X handle seen by Net Gazette.

He stated, “Starting from 20th May 2024, every individual in Nigeria engaging in electronic transactions will be charged a 0.5% levy attributed to Bola Tinubu.”

He estimated an annual collection of N3 trillion, condemning it as “pure cruelty” and a violation of the social contract.

Shehu pointed out Tinubu’s past actions, such as subsidy removals and debt accumulation, as signs of greed.

He expressed worry about potential future levies on various aspects of life, suggesting it’s aimed at financing elections and instilling fear. Shehu concluded, “Given this evident greed and cruelty, a reckoning is imminent.”
