The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially denied engaging in any merger, fusion, or amalgamation discussions with other political parties.
This announcement comes in response to rumors following PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and his purported coalition efforts with Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi, and other political entities.
Yunusa Tanko, spokesman for the former Obi-Datti presidential campaign council, clarified that Peter Obi is not interested in any merger aimed at political power consolidation.
Following its 587th meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, the PDP NWC reaffirmed its openness to welcoming back former members who had departed to join other parties. The committee highlighted the ongoing growth and strength of the PDP, evidenced by a significant increase in membership across the country’s electoral wards.
In a statement by PDP spokesman, Debo Ologunagba, the party declared: “While the PDP, as a truly people’s Party, is open and welcoming to all Nigerians including our former members who left for other parties, we state that our Party remains strong and formidable, capable of winning elections in a free, fair and transparent electoral process in our country.”
Ologunagba also emphasized the influx of millions of Nigerians into the party, reinforcing the PDP’s position as the preferred choice for the majority. He urged the public, party members, democratic institutions, and the international community to disregard any reports suggesting a merger between the PDP and any other political party.
The PDP’s stance highlights its confidence in maintaining electoral success independently and its commitment to a transparent political process in Nigeria.
