The Kano State Government is ready to register 119,903 students who took the 2024 NECO and NBAIS exams in all 44 local governments of the state.
The state Commissioner of Education, Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa, announced this today during a press briefing in his office.
Umar Haruna disclosed that earlier, a proposal was made to the Governor on 8 credits (including mathematics and English) as a condition for a student to pass the qualifying examination. This was later rejected by the Governor, who opted to pay for any student that obtained 4 credits in any course.
“By this development, about 109,891 students representing 83% who sat for the KERD examination would be sponsored by the government, while 10,012 students representing 97.24% who sat for the NBAIS examination would be sponsored by the government.
“A total cost of N2,664,856,750 (Two Billion, Six Hundred and Sixty-Four Million, Eight Hundred and Fifty-Six Thousand, Seven Hundred and Fifty Naira) would be spent by the government on NECO, while N248,826,000 (Two Hundred and Forty-Eight Million, Eight Hundred and Twenty-Six Thousand Naira) would be spent on the NBAIS examination respectively,” said Doguwa.
Doguwa explained that for both the students who sat for NECO and NBAIS examinations, the Kano State Government would pay the sum of N2,910,652,700 (Two Billion, Nine Hundred and Ten Million, Six Hundred and Fifty-Two Thousand, Seven Hundred Naira), which he said would enable most of the students in the state who cannot afford to pay to pass the examinations.
He explained that when the present administration of Abba Kabir Yusuf came in, there was a system by the previous government of sponsoring candidates with 6 credits including Mathematics and English, which represented only 34% of students who sat for NECO and 20% of students who sat for the NBAIS examination in 2022.
The Commissioner added, “In our effort to ensure that our students get admission to higher institutions, the administration of Abba Kabir Yusuf has paid NECO and NBAIS registration fees for 2021, 2022, and 2023, which were inherited from the previous government.”
He called on the people in the state to continue to support the present administration in its effort to address all challenges surrounding the education sector.
