The Police Service Commission (PSC) has confirmed the appointment of AIG Yahaya Sahabo Abubakar as Deputy Inspector General of Police.
AIG Abubakar who is previously overseeing Zone 14 Katsina, Abubakar will now represent the North East Geopolitical zone on the Police Management Team. This appointment follows the retirement of DIG Habu Sani, who formerly led the Force Intelligence Bureau.
In addition to Abubakar’s elevation, the PSC has approved the promotion of 122 senior police officers. This includes ten Commissioners of Police advancing to Assistant Inspectors General, fifteen Deputy Commissioners of Police promoted to Commissioners, and thirty-six Assistant Commissioners of Police raised to Deputy Commissioners. Sixty-one Chief Superintendents of Police were also promoted to Assistant Commissioners of Police.
These decisions were finalized at an extraordinary Management Meeting on June 6, 2024, chaired by Dr. Solomon Arase, CFR, retired Inspector General of Police. During the meeting, the fifteen Deputy Commissioners of Police, ten Commissioners, and AIG Abubakar underwent a mandatory interactive promotion interview.
Dr. Arase emphasized the importance of adapting to the evolving landscape of crime and technology. He urged the officers to develop effective policing strategies and uphold their responsibility to protect lives and property across Nigeria. He also assured that the PSC is committed to regular and predictable promotions for police personnel.
The newly promoted Assistant Inspectors General include Ahmed Ammani, Mohammed Dankwara Adamu, Gumel Mohammed Usaini, Hamzat Adebola Ayinde, Okuoma Idegwu Basil, Achinyan Zachary’s Fera, Baba Zango Ibrahim, Mohammed Isyaku, and Margaret Agebe Ochalla.
Promoted to the rank of Commissioners of Police are DCP Bassey Samuel Ewah, Osagie John Agans-Irabor, Edem Ita Selong, Monday Agbonika, Michael Okoh, Ayodele Oluyemi Sonubi, Iyama Daniel Edobor, Isa Danladi Nda, Akaniyene Ifebem Ezima, and Livingston Ikioye Orutugu, among others.
The list of promoted officers has been forwarded to the Inspector General of Police for implementation and further action.
