No Strike Resumption on Tuesday – NLC Clarifies

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has refuted claims circulating about a planned resumption of the recent nationwide strike on Tuesday.

The confusion arose from an interview with NLC’s Assistant General Secretary, Chris Onyeka, on Channels TV.

He explained that during the interview, he was asked about the one-week deadline agreed upon between labour and the government to conclude minimum wage negotiations. He simply stated that the deadline falls on Tuesday, prompting further deliberation by the NLC organs based on the negotiation outcome.

“The video clip of my chat with Channels TV presenters is there to prove I never said labour may resume strike on Tuesday,” Onyeka emphasized.

Meanwhile, an anonymous NLC National Executive Council (NEC) member revealed that a meeting might be delayed due to labour leaders attending the International Labour Conference in Geneva.

“We in labour don’t act impulsively, we assess the situation, agreements reached, and hold discussions within all organs before taking action. We paused the strike for negotiations, and now we await the government’s next move.” The member stressed

Although governors have expressed an inability to pay above N60,000, the NLC believes President Tinubu will intervene and advocate for a living wage for Nigerian workers. The member concluded by reiterating, “The labour organs will surely meet to decide on further action, but there’s no strike resumption on Tuesday.”
