PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu spoke out on Wednesday about the devastating impact of drug abuse on individuals and families. He emphasized, during World Drug Day at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, that funding evidence-based preventive measures would not only save lives but also conserve resources that would otherwise be spent on treatment and rehabilitation.

The theme, “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention,” underscores the urgency of dedicating more resources to the collective fight against the consequences of illicit drug abuse.

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, George Akume, the President commended organizations, communities, and individuals in the country working to prevent drug abuse and its associated harms to the nation.

“Drugs and substances have wreaked havoc on individuals, families, communities, and countries worldwide,” he added.

“In the face of such a formidable challenge, prevention is the most potent weapon at our disposal,” President Tinubu declared.

“Prevention not only saves lives; it also saves resources that would otherwise be spent on treatment and rehabilitation.”

President Tinubu further stated that his government would support the NDLEA and other stakeholders in building upon the successes achieved in recent years.

“Together, we can build a country where every individual has the opportunity to live a drug-free life, where communities thrive, and where hope replaces despair,” Tinubu concluded.
