The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has committed to enhancing its support to improve breastfeeding rates among lactating women in Jigawa State, aiming to benefit children’s health.
UNICEF Kano Field Office Nutrition Officer, Dr. Abigail Nyam, announced this initiative at the launch of World Breastfeeding Week in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital.
Dr. Nyam highlighted that despite prevailing myths about exclusive breastfeeding, mothers should heed advice from experts and those who have successfully practiced it.
She emphasized that in Nigeria, breastfeeding is vital for the survival, health, and well-being of infants and young children, providing essential nutrients and protection against illnesses crucial for child development.
“The 2024 focus of the week is on reducing inequalities that hinder access to breastfeeding support. Vulnerable mothers require additional assistance to ensure their children are well breastfed,” she said. “By improving breastfeeding support in Nigeria, we address social inequalities that impede sustainable development and public health.”
Dr. Nyam noted that breastfeeding serves as an equalizer in society, offering every Nigerian child a healthy start in life, regardless of socio-economic status.
She also commended the Jigawa State Government, especially the First Lady, for their unwavering support of UNICEF’s initiatives.
In his remarks, Jigawa State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdullahi Kainuwa, cited Quranic verses that advocate for exclusive breastfeeding, stressing its importance in protecting children against diseases and ensuring their well-being.
Additionally, State Commissioner for Local Government, Mr. Ahmad Garba, announced the donation of motherhood kits and cash tokens to about 500 lactating mothers, highlighting the Ministry’s support for the Ministry of Health and the State Primary Healthcare Agency in promoting safe motherhood.
Jigawa First Lady, Hajiya Hadiza Umar Namadi, represented by Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Hadiza Abdulwahab, pledged continuous support for the cause, advocating for exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a baby’s life.
The theme for World Breastfeeding Week 2024 is “Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support for All.”
