The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has expressed concern over the recent suspension of 22 Kannywood films by the Kano State Censorship Board, warning that such action risks infringing on digital rights and stifling creative expression.
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Y.Z. Ya’u, CITAD acknowledged the role of regulatory bodies in preserving cultural values but cautioned against overreach.
“While we acknowledge the importance of promoting cultural values and maintaining societal ethics, we caution that regulatory actions must not infringe on citizens’ digital rights or suppress creative expression,” Ya’u said.
The organization emphasized that digital platforms are now essential spaces where young people learn, create, and engage with the world.
“In an age where the internet is a powerful tool for education, entertainment, and economic empowerment, young people increasingly embrace digital platforms to access diverse content,” the statement noted.
Ya’u warned that clamping down on digital content without thoughtful consideration could have unintended consequences.
“Attempting to regulate digital content without careful consideration may not only restrict creative freedom but also push local creators towards alternative platforms and film industries that may lack the cultural safeguards the state aims to uphold,” he said.
He further explained that such overregulation might expose audiences to content that contradicts the very values the Censorship Board is trying to protect.
CITAD also highlighted the recent arrest of Kano Times reporter, Buhari Abba, describing it as part of a troubling trend of digital rights violations in the state.
“Such incidents not only undermine public trust but also threaten the fundamental rights of citizens as guaranteed under Nigeria’s Constitution,” Ya’u added.
He stressed that efforts to restrict access to digital content are unlikely to succeed in the modern world.
“The internet is a borderless space, a global village where information and content flow freely across boundaries. It is impractical for any state to isolate itself in this interconnected world,” Ya’u said.
CITAD concluded by calling on the Kano State Government to uphold digital rights and urged the Censorship Board to engage filmmakers and digital rights advocates in finding a more balanced approach to content regulation.
