Abba Kyari Released After 27 Months in Detention

In a development sparking mixed reactions, Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari has been released from the Kuje Custodial Centre after spending 27 months in detention.

Kyari’s arrest by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in February 2022 stemmed from alleged involvement with an international drug cartel. He, along with members of his police unit and two suspected traffickers, faced arraignment in March 2022.

Despite repeated attempts, Kyari’s previous requests for bail were denied. However, a recent ruling by a Federal High Court judge granted him temporary release on May 22nd to attend his late mother’s burial ceremonies.

The court has scheduled a hearing for Kyari’s main bail application related to the drug trafficking charges on May 31, 2024.

News of Kyari’s release comes after confirmation by Adamu Duza, spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service in Abuja. Duza stated that Kyari met his bail conditions and was freed on Friday evening.
