Nigeria Labour Congress Strike: Decision Pending After Government Meeting

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has thrown cold water on reports that the nationwide strike is over. In a statement, the union clarified that workers will remain on strike until their official bodies review the resolutions reached during a meeting with the federal government yesterday.

“The strike continues,” the NLC declared, emphasizing that a decision will only be made after internal discussions scheduled for today, June 4th.

Despite the NLC’s stance, reports from the Kano Times suggest a possible breakthrough. The outlet claims the strike may end soon following a lengthy meeting between government officials and labour representatives in Abuja on Monday evening.

The meeting, convened by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, reportedly yielded a signed resolution co-authored by NLC President Joe Ajaero, Trade Union Congress (TUC) President Festus Osifo, Information Minister Mohammed Idris, and Labour Minister Nkiruka Onyejeocha.

While the details of the agreement remain undisclosed, it has sparked optimism that the strike might be called off soon. However, the NLC’s official statement underscores the need for internal union approval before any suspension of the industrial action.
