Gunmen Attack NUJ Secretariat in Yobe, Injure Policeman

The Yobe State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has come under attack by unidentified gunmen, who stormed its secretariat in Damaturu in the early hours of Friday.

The assailants, who struck around 2 a.m., shot a police officer on duty at the premises, leaving him with a gunshot wound on the leg.

The wounded officer was immediately rushed to the Police Hospital in Damaturu, where he is said to be responding to treatment.

Reacting to the incident, Chairman of the NUJ in Yobe, Rajab Ismail Mohammed, described the attack as “unfortunate and scary,” adding that it was not only an assault on the security guard but also an act of intimidation against journalists in the state.

“This is clearly an intimidation tactic against the press corps in Yobe State, and it is unacceptable,” he said.

Mohammed called on security agencies to swing into action by investigating the matter and ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to book.

At the time of filing this report, the police authorities in Yobe were yet to issue an official statement on the attack.
