IWD: Kano govt to empower 1,028 women, rehabilitate female drug addicts

The Kano State Government will empower 1,028 women to improve their livelihood and become self reliant, the Commissioner for Women, Children and Disabled, Aisha Lawan-Saji, said on Friday.

The commissioner said while briefing newsmen in commemoration of the 2024 International Women’s Day, that the beneficiaries would include survivors of gender based violence, HIV patients and women groups.

Rs Lawan-Saji, who was represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Sa’adatu Sa’idu-Bala, said the women would undergo training in agricultural production, processing and marketing, while some would receive N20,000 grant to boost their businesses.

According to her, the government has given N20,000 each to 2,000 People Living with Disability, in addition to 4,000 bags of food items across the 44 local government areas of the state.

“We empowered 200 children with the sum of N10,000 each to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal and empowered 40 survivors of Vesical Virginal Fistula (VVF),” the commissioner added.

According to her, the ministry will renovate Gaya orphanage home to serve as training and rehabilitation centre for female drug addicts.

“We repatriated and reunited 38 sex workers and their children with their families, and we intend to train and empower them to be self reliant.

“The ministry will implement quarterly support for PWD’s in the state and conduct out of school adolescent girls skills acquisition programme in the
state,” Mrs Lawan-Saji said.

The commissioner pledged to continue collaboration with partners on the implementation of the child protection law in the state, and also intensify sensitisation on ways to reduce high infant mortality.
