CBN revokes licence of Heritage Bank, Due to Poor Financial Performance

In a move to safeguard the stability of Nigeria’s financial system, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has revoked the operating license of Heritage Bank Plc, effective immediately.

The action stems from Heritage Bank’s prolonged struggle to improve its financial health. Despite CBN intervention and various supervisory measures, the bank’s performance continued to decline, posing a potential threat to the overall financial landscape.

“The bank’s Board and Management have not been able to improve the bank’s financial performance,” stated CBN’s Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Mrs. Hakama Sidi Ali. “This situation unfortunately presented a risk to financial stability.”

The CBN emphasizes its commitment to public trust and the health of the financial system. Revoking Heritage Bank’s license, they claim, is a necessary step to maintain public confidence and prevent any potential harm to the wider financial sector.

The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has been appointed as the official liquidator, responsible for handling the bank’s closure in accordance with the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA) 2020.

The CBN assures the public that the Nigerian financial system remains strong. This action, they maintain, reflects their dedication to taking all necessary steps to ensure the continued safety and soundness of Nigeria’s financial institutions.
