New Armed Group Emerges in Five Sokoto Local Government Areas

The Sokoto State government has reported the emergence of a new armed group called LAKURAWAS, which is believed to be active in five local government areas across the state.

Deputy Governor Idris Mohammed Gobir disclosed the development during a visit from National Defence College (NDC) participants on a study tour. Gobir described LAKURAWAS as a group with “faith-based idealistic views” and reported they are equipped with advanced weaponry, with activities affecting several communities.

“This is particularly concerning as Sokoto State is already facing significant challenges from ongoing banditry,” Gobir noted.

Gobir also stated that the state government is working with federal security agencies to address the threat and to protect residents. He expressed hope that the NDC study tour would provide valuable perspectives to aid the government’s efforts in securing the region.

Air Vice Marshal Titus Zuwahu Dauda, head of the NDC delegation, highlighted the role of the college in preparing officers for strategic responsibilities. He mentioned that the team would submit their findings to the state government at the end of their tour.
