Why Tinubu’s Influence Poses a Challenge for Nigerian Politicians – Sule Lamido

In an interview with Trust TV, former Jigawa governor Sule Lamido reflected on the historical and current challenges facing the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and explained why Nigerian politicians might be wary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s influence.

Lamido argued that the PDP’s present crises are partly rooted in divisions that emerged among northern leaders in 2007, exacerbated by internal power struggles. He recounted how the PDP initially focused on uniting Nigerians after the 1993 election annulment, placing an emphasis on national unity over regional interests. Despite the PDP’s legacy, he lamented its fragmentation as members defected to form the APC, which he believes inherits many PDP issues.

Lamido criticized Tinubu’s approach to power as self-serving and strategically calculated, emphasizing his rise through alliances and dominance in the southwest. He views Tinubu’s presidency as driven by personal interests rather than national unity, and he believes this should concern Nigerian leaders.

Reflecting on his role, Lamido expressed a commitment to revitalizing the PDP for Nigeria’s benefit, calling for unity among past and current PDP members to create a credible opposition. He concluded by suggesting that Nigeria needs a leader like a “Moses” to guide the country toward genuine change.
