CITAD Campaigns for Equal Access to STEM for PWDs

Ahead of the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) paid an advocacy visit to the Kano State Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation to advance the inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in science, technology, and innovation initiatives in Kano State.

During the visit, Buhari Abba, Program Officer at CITAD, highlighted the significant barriers faced by PWDs despite progress in policy implementation.

“Despite notable strides in governance and policy implementation, PWDs in Kano State continue to face significant barriers, including limited access to digital tools, exclusion from STEM opportunities, and inadequate platforms to showcase their innovative potential,” he said.

He emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to address these challenges. “As an organization committed to empowering marginalized communities, CITAD believes that through joint efforts, we can bridge these gaps and create an inclusive, tech-driven society that leaves no one behind,” Mr. Abba stated.

CITAD outlined proposals to the ministry, including digital skills training, increased representation in STEM fields, development and accessibility of assistive technologies, advocacy for digital inclusion policies, and specialized training for PWDs preparing for UTME examinations.

In response, the Commissioner for Science, Technology, and Innovation, Muhammad Tajo Othman, commended CITAD for its dedication to inclusion and empowerment.

“We recognize and appreciate CITAD’s dedication to advancing the rights and opportunities of PWDs. Our ministry is always open to collaborating with development partners like CITAD to address societal challenges,” the commissioner said.

He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to enhancing the lives of PWDs, announcing plans to establish Computer-Based Training (CBT) centers across all 44 local government areas, tailored to accommodate all PWD clusters.

“The Kano State Government is always ready to improve the lives of PWDs,” he affirmed, further disclosing that a dedicated Desk Officer for PWDs will be appointed to oversee their inclusion in science, technology, and innovation programs.
