The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), in collaboration with Advocats Sans Frontieres and Spaces for Change, with support from the European Union, organized a Women’s Digital Rights Video Competition.
The event took place on Wednesday in Kano and brought together secondary school students, stakeholders, and digital inclusion advocates to discuss women’s digital rights.
Participating schools included Fatima Muhammad Girls Secondary School, Government Girls Secondary School Dorayi Karama, Government Girls Secondary School U/Uku, GTC Dala, and New GSTC.
The Executive Director of CITAD, Malam Y.Z. Ya’u, represented by Senior Programs Officer Isa Garba, emphasized the importance of the students’ involvement. “This competition is not just about creativity; it is about amplifying the voices of young people to address critical issues such as access to digital technology, online safety, and the promotion of women’s rights in the digital space.”
Engr. Ya’u explained that the initiative aims to engage the younger generation in addressing gender equality and digital inclusion. “It provides a platform for students to showcase their understanding of the challenges women face online and propose innovative solutions.”
Mr. Ali Sabo, the E-Rights Program Officer in Kano State, drew attention to the rising issue of cyberbullying in Nigeria, especially among young people and girls. He stressed the importance of community-driven solutions to tackle such challenges.
“This initiative encourages communities to develop solutions tailored to their specific needs rather than relying solely on civil society organizations.”
He further highlighted that similar competitions had been held in Imo State, with Lagos and Abuja set to host subsequent editions, culminating in a national competition in Abuja.
The Chief Jury, Comrade Salisu M. Indabawa, announced the competition’s winners. New GSTC claimed the first prize, followed by GTC Dala in second place and GGSS U/Uku in third. GSS Dorayi Karama and Fatima Muhammad Girls Secondary School secured fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
“No one here is a loser,” Indabawa addressed the participants. “You’ve all shown exceptional creativity and determination. Keep striving for excellence in future events.”
All participants were rewarded with cash prizes and certificates of recognition.
