Tinubu Recognized Cryptocurrency Early, Says SEC DG

The Director General of the Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Emomotimi Agama, has stated that President Bola Tinubu showed support for cryptocurrency long before former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Speaking at the African Financial Industry Summit in Casablanca, Morocco, Agama linked his appointment as SEC head to the president’s interest in the cryptocurrency sector, describing it as a recognition of his enthusiasm for the industry.

On the event’s purpose, Agama said it focused on integrating African capital markets and financial systems to enable seamless service delivery across the continent.

Addressing cryptocurrency regulation in Nigeria, Agama noted that the current administration has taken steps to engage with the sector, including establishing programs like the Regulatory Incubation and Accelerated Regulatory Incubation initiatives. These frameworks aim to monitor existing cryptocurrency exchanges and assess associated risks.

Agama also mentioned efforts to work with other authorities to expand access to cryptocurrency in Nigeria, particularly for young people, and across Africa.
