Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has announced plans to pay workers a minimum wage of N70,500 starting in December, despite an ongoing strike that has shut down government offices across the state.
The governor made this statement during the commissioning of the newly refurbished office of Deputy Governor Emmanuel Akabe in Lafia.
The strike began after workers accused the state government of failing to implement the N70,000 national minimum wage, which was recently approved by the federal government. Civil servants, led by labor union leaders, closed down ministries, departments, and agencies in protest.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Chairman in Nasarawa, Ismaila Okoh, criticized the government for not formalizing its commitment to the wage increase, despite multiple negotiations. “All offices will remain closed until the state government starts paying the N70,000 minimum wage,” Okoh stated.
Governor Sule called on the striking workers to return to work, emphasizing that the approved minimum wage would be implemented this month. He also reiterated his administration’s intention to ensure salaries are paid on time.
