FG and NLC Establish Joint Committee to Review 50% Telecom Tariff Increase

The Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have convened to address the recent 50% hike in telecommunication tariffs imposed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The meeting, initiated by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, sought to foster industrial harmony and safeguard the interests of Nigerians.

In a statement issued on Monday by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Media in the Office of the SGF, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, representing the Federal Government, explained that the purpose of the meeting was to examine the NCC’s study that justified the tariff increase.

Following extensive discussions, both parties agreed to form a 10-member committee, comprising five representatives from the Federal Government and five from the NLC. The committee is tasked with reviewing the NCC’s study and submitting its findings within two weeks.

NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, stated that the union would await the committee’s report before deciding on its next steps.

The meeting was attended by key officials, including the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani; the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; and the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, among others.
