Kwankwaso Sidelined as NNPP Elects New Leadership at National Convention

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has elected Agbo Major as its new national chairman in a convention held at RockView Hotel, Apapa—without the presence of Rabiu Kwankwaso’s allies or supporters. The event, which brought together party delegates and officials from across the country, marks a significant shift in the party’s leadership.

Other key officials elected include Oginni Olaposi as national secretary, Felix Chukwurah as deputy national chairman (South), Adetoyese Omokanye as national treasurer, Babayo Muhammed as deputy national chairman (North), and Abdulrasaq Abdulsallam as national publicity secretary. Aisha Kade was elected national woman leader, Edward Ofomona as national youth leader, and Omolara Johnson as national organising secretary.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was also instructed to recognize and engage with the newly constituted leadership.

Speaking at the convention, Mr. Aniebonam emphasized the significance of the event:

“Today, the board shall conclude its assignment through the national convention to elect and establish its National Working Committee to take charge of its administration and management. INEC and security agencies were duly notified.”

BoT Secretary Mohammed Babayo acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed confidence in the party’s future:

“The task ahead is huge, but with unity, hard work, and a clear vision, we will continue to strengthen the NNPP and position it as a true vehicle for change in Nigeria.”

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Major extended an olive branch to aggrieved members, urging them to return and contribute to the party’s growth.

“I thank all delegates for the huge confidence reposed in me. I won’t take this trust for granted. The NWC under me is poised to deliver and reposition the NNPP for 2027.”

With this leadership transition, the NNPP enters a new phase, potentially redefining its direction ahead of the next general elections.
