Member of the House of Representatives, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, has responded to Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, accusing him of hypocrisy over his recent criticism of politicians defecting from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Rurum, who represents Rano/Bunkure/Kibiya Federal Constituency and chairs the House Committee on Air Force, described Kwankwaso’s remarks as both ironic and misleading.
“At a meeting in his Miller Road residence, Kwankwaso called the defections a ‘political sin.’ But let’s not forget, this is someone who has switched parties multiple times himself,” Rurum said in a statement on Saturday.
He reminded Nigerians that Kwankwaso left the PDP for the APC in 2015, returned to the PDP in 2018, and then moved to the NNPP in 2022.
“If changing parties is truly a sin, then Kwankwaso himself is guilty several times over,” Rurum stated.
Rurum emphasized that the recent move by himself, Senator Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, Hon. Abdullahi Sani Rogo, Hon. Idrees Dankawu, Rt. Hon. Zubairu Hamza Masu, Hon. Sha’aban Ibrahim Sharada, Hon. Badamasi Ayuba Danbatta, Hon. Nura Muhammad Dankadai, Rt. Hon. Alassan Abubakar Kibiya, and many other prominent NNPP members to rejoin the APC was not out of opportunism but a response to current political realities.
“We’re not in politics for noise or social media trends. We’re here because of our commitment to our people and the communities we serve. That’s what earned us our mandates,” he said.
He also criticized the tone of Kwankwaso’s comments, saying they reflected a refusal to accept that politics in Kano is evolving.
“Kwankwaso’s message came across as entitled and filled with subtle threats. The time when one person dictates the direction of Kano politics is gone,” Rurum said.
He further alleged that while Kwankwaso criticizes others for aligning with the APC, he was seen last year in France, lobbying for political favors—not for the benefit of Kano people, but for personal gain.
Rurum said the defection to the APC has already started yielding benefits for his constituency.
“Since joining the APC, we’ve attracted development projects in education, agriculture, and infrastructure. These are real outcomes, not empty slogans,” he said.
He urged political followers to focus on results and development, not personality-driven politics.
“Politics should be about making lives better, not massaging egos or following anyone blindly,” he concluded.
