Edo State Pilgrim Passes Away During Hajj in Saudi Arabia

An elderly pilgrim from Edo State has died in Saudi Arabia while performing the 2025 hajj pilgrimage.

Adizatu Dazumi, 75, from Jattu Uzairue in Etsako West Local Government Area, passed away on Monday at King Fahad General Hospital in Makkah following what officials described as a brief illness.

According to Musah Uduimoh, chairman of the Muslim Pilgrims’ Welfare Board, Dazumi became ill shortly after completing the Tawaaf—the sacred ritual of circumambulating the Ka’aba. She was hospitalized on Sunday but died the following day despite receiving medical care.

“She died the following day despite receiving medical attention,” Uduimoh stated on Tuesday when confirming the incident.

Following Islamic burial customs, Dazumi was laid to rest in Makkah on the same day she passed away. Her family in Jattu Uzairue has been officially informed of her death.

The welfare board chairman expressed condolences to the bereaved family and reassured other pilgrims that authorities remain committed to safeguarding their health and well-being during the pilgrimage.

The incident highlights the physical demands placed on elderly pilgrims during the hajj, one of Islam’s five pillars that draws millions of Muslims to Saudi Arabia annually.
