Sultan Calls on Nigerian Muslims to Sighting New Moon for Rabi’ul Awwal

SOKOTO – The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on all Nigerian Muslims to be on the lookout for the new moon of Rabi’ul Awwal 1447 AH on Saturday, August 23, 2025.

The announcement was made in a statement by the Chairman of the Sultanate Council’s Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Prof. Sambo Junaidu, who is also the Wazirin Sokoto. The statement confirmed that Saturday marks the 29th day of the current Islamic month, Safar 1447 AH, a crucial time for the moon sighting.

Muslims are urged to actively participate in this important religious duty. According to the statement, anyone who sights the crescent moon should promptly report it to the nearest District or Village Head. This information will then be relayed to the Sultanate Council for an official declaration.

The commencement of Rabi’ul Awwal is a highly significant event for Muslims worldwide, as it is the month in which the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was born. The Council underscored the importance of this collective effort, which officially marks the start of the third month of the Islamic calendar.

Prof. Junaidu concluded with a prayer for divine guidance, stating, “May Allah (SWT) help us in this duty.”
