EFCC Declares Ex-Abia Commissioner Enweremadu Wanted Over Alleged Corruption, Money Laundering

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has declared former Abia State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Christopher Enweremadu, wanted over allegations of criminal conspiracy, diversion of public funds, stealing, and money laundering.

In a public notice issued on Wednesday and signed by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the EFCC listed Enweremadu’s last known address as the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Umuahia, Abia State.

“The public is hereby notified that CHRISTOPHER ENWEREMADU is wanted by the EFCC in an alleged case of Criminal Conspiracy, Diversion of Public Funds, Stealing, and Money Laundering. Anybody with useful information as to his whereabouts should please contact the Commission at any of its zonal offices nationwide,” the statement read.

Enweremadu, who served under former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, has previously been linked to investigations into the management of funds allocated to local government councils in the state.

In December 2024, an Abuja High Court ordered a probe into funds allocated to Abia’s 17 local government areas between 2019 and 2023, directing the EFCC to submit its findings. The court also ordered the seizure of travel documents belonging to Enweremadu and two others — Erondu Uchenna Erondu, a former aide to Ikpeazu, and Deaconess Joy Nwanju, a Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.

The court’s decision followed an ex parte motion by an activist who alleged that billions of naira allocated to the 17 LGAs were diverted by the officials during the period.

The EFCC has not released further details on the transactions tied to its fresh wanted notice.

The move comes weeks after the Commission also declared Abdullahi Bashir Haske, an Adamawa-born entrepreneur and associate of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, wanted over alleged conspiracy and money laundering.
