Jibrin accepts NNPP expulsion, alleges lack of due process

Nigerian lawmaker Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa said on Saturday he accepted his expulsion from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) but accused the party of acting without due process.

Jibrin, who represents Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency, described the move as “a surprise and a rude shock,” adding that the penalty was linked to an interview he granted in English and Hausa.

“I strongly believe the contents of the interview I granted few days ago should not warrant such heavy penalty because it is in tandem with the core principles of our party and movement which allows for dissenting views,” he said in a statement.

The former party stalwart said he was not given the opportunity to defend himself before the announcement was made. “No invitation was extended to me to defend or explain myself by any organ of the party,” he said, accusing the NNPP of neglecting fair hearing and justice.

While stressing that he accepted the decision “in good faith and without grudges,” Jibrin faulted allegations that he had failed to pay party dues, insisting he never defaulted and would pay any outstanding fees once formally invoiced.

He also criticised the party’s treatment of its members. “The party does not believe anybody has political value and comes short in treating people with the respect they deserve at various levels,” he said.

Jibrin thanked the NNPP for the support he received during his stay, saying he was proud of his contributions. He added that he would consult widely before deciding his next political move.

“Finally, I will carefully weigh all the options before me as I decide on my next political home. SO HELP ME GOD,” he said.
