The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has commended the election of its Coordinator for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), Hamza Aminu Fagge, as Youth Leader of the Nigerian Association of the Blind (NAB), Kano State Chapter.
Fagge, who clinched victory on Saturday, September 6, 2025, polled 64 out of 71 total votes in what CITAD described as a reflection of the “trust, confidence, and admiration the community has for his dedication and leadership.”
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Y.Z. Ya’u, CITAD said it has, over the years, remained committed to empowering PWDs through technology, advocacy, and capacity building.
“At CITAD, we believe that no society can truly progress without inclusivity, and we continue to champion initiatives that open doors of opportunity for PWDs,” the statement read.
It added that the organisation’s interventions include establishing digital skills training hubs that equip PWDs with employable skills, producing Braille materials for the visually impaired, and advocating policies that make assistive technologies accessible and affordable.
Ya’u noted that beyond training, CITAD has continued to support PWDs to demand their rights, participate fully in society, and use technology as a tool to amplify their voices.
“We at CITAD are deeply proud of the work Hamza has been doing and are delighted with the recognition accorded to him through this democratic process,” the statement said. “While congratulating him on this well-deserved success, we assure him of our unwavering support as he takes on this new responsibility.”
CITAD also congratulated other newly elected officials of NAB, Kano State Chapter, and lauded the peaceful and transparent conduct of the polls.
“This demonstrates the unity, maturity, and commitment of the association to strengthening its internal democracy,” Ya’u added.
The group further urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to learn lessons from the NAB elections as it prepares for the 2027 general polls.
CITAD reaffirmed its resolve to continue working with NAB and other stakeholders to promote the rights, dignity, and empowerment of persons with disabilities in Nigeria.
