The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), with support from the Association for Progressive Communications (APC), has initiated a three-week training program on the repair, recovery, and reuse (3R) of digital technology for 20 youths in Kano state.
The Executive Director of CITAD, Engr. Yunusa Zakari Ya’u, made this announcement in Kano on Tuesday during the launch of the training program.
Engr. Yunusa, who was represented by CITAD’s Community Network Coordinator, Malam Haruna Adamu Hadejia, stated that the program aims to address e-waste issues and promote a circular economy in Kano and other regions.
“In light of the foregoing, the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) recognizes the potential of young people and is committed to providing them with the e-waste skills and opportunities needed to build a prosperous and sustainable future in the circular economy,” he said.
In his remarks, the program officer of the project, Malam Ibrahim Nuhu, stated that the central objective of the training is to “build the capacity of participants in the safe extraction of useful components from e-waste and to understand the value chain and trade links of e-waste.”
He emphasized the significance of equipping young people with an understanding of e-waste and promoting the circular economy as a vehicle for transformation in a globalized and competitive world.
Malam Ibrahim Nuhu also added that equipping young people with e-waste skills, abilities, and an understanding of the circular economy is the catalyst required for gainful employment and entrepreneurship.
Dr. Maimuna Shehu Rufa’i of the Federal University Dutse highlighted one of the major problems in the country as the issue of waste management.
She added that the existing authorities lack the technical capabilities and resources to efficiently manage waste.
“The rate of electronic waste generation has increased tremendously, and unfortunately, the method by which the waste is handled is too poor,” Dr. Maimuna said.
Dr. Maimuna also pointed out that the circular economy aims to minimize waste and maximize the value of resources by promoting recycling, reuse, and regeneration, as well as creating jobs and transitioning to renewable energy sources for a sustainable future.
She urged participants to acquire skills and become self-reliant, stating, “It is by doing so that you would become important stakeholders in the economic life of our country, thereby participating in the onerous task of nation-building.”
