CITAD, RLF Host Roundtable Discussion and Book Review Spotlighting ‘The Depiction of Poverty in Nigeria’

The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), along with the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, on Wednesday organized a book review titled “The Face of Poverty in Nigeria” at Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano. Academics analyzed the book’s findings to suggest solutions for Nigeria’s poverty issues.

Dr. Jazuli Mukhtar of Geography Department of Yusuf Maitama Sule University highlighted Nigeria’s high poverty rate and praised the review for identifying gaps in the book.

Dr. Muhammad Shamsudeen of the Department of Economics, Bayero University Kano, emphasized engaging directly with the poor to understand their needs and criticized the book’s small sample size.

Despite its limitations, the book offers valuable insights into Nigeria’s poverty. Supported by foundations and building on previous work, the review aimed to generate recommendations to combat poverty in the country.

The Face of Poverty in Nigeria is a research project supported by Luxumberg Foundation and the Yusuf Bala Usman Institute, seeks to penetrate the statistics on poverty to shine a light on the individuals – women and men, in urban and rural areas, in all parts of Nigeria – who are actually experiencing it. We document in their own words how they live, their problems, and their strategies for coping with often impossible situations.
