Today, August 30, 2024, marks the birthday of Alhaji Sule Lamido, a towering figure in Nigerian politics, renowned for his commitment to the ideals of democracy, social justice, and grassroots empowerment. Born on August 30, 1948, in Bamaina, Birnin Kudu Local Government Area of Jigawa State, Lamido’s journey from a passionate youth in the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) to a distinguished statesman and former governor of Jigawa State is a reflection of his resilience, vision, and leadership.
Lamido’s political career took root during Nigeria’s Second Republic under the mentorship of the late Malam Aminu Kano, whose revolutionary ideals resonated deeply with him. Impressed by Lamido’s youthful zeal and dedication to the cause of uplifting the downtrodden, Aminu Kano entrusted him with a ticket to represent Birnin Kudu in the House of Representatives. This early exposure to politics under the PRP banner laid the foundation for Lamido’s lifelong commitment to the welfare of the common people, particularly the poor, whom he affectionately referred to as the “Talakawas.”
Throughout his career, Lamido has been described as a political philosopher, a true leader with vision and passion, and a mediator for the Talakawas. His grassroots mobilization skills and belief in the ideology of making life better for the masses have earned him a revered place in the hearts of many Nigerians. His tenure as Governor of Jigawa State from 2007 to 2015 is particularly noteworthy for the wisdom, vision, and exemplary leadership he exhibited, transforming Jigawa into a shining example of progress in Northern Nigeria.
Before becoming governor, Lamido had already established himself as a formidable political force. As Foreign Affairs Minister from 1999 to 2003 under President Olusegun Obasanjo, he tackled critical issues such as human trafficking, child abuse, child labor, and slavery, earning accolades both Nationally and Internationally. His efforts were a reflection of his deep-seated belief in political and economic freedom, values that have guided him throughout his political journey.
Lamido’s rise to prominence was not without challenges. He faced trials and torments, including imprisonment in 1998 for opposing General Sani Abacha’s attempt to extend his rule. However, these experiences only strengthened his resolve to continue serving the public and advocating for justice and democracy. His imprisonment, rather than deterring him, fueled his determination to fight for a better Nigeria.
In 2007, Lamido’s unrelenting commitment to his people led him to contest the governorship of Jigawa State once again. This time, his perseverance paid off, and he was elected governor, ushering in a period of remarkable development in the state. His administration was marked by significant strides in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and social services, all aimed at improving the lives of the people of Jigawa.
Lamido’s political ambitions extended beyond the governorship. In 2017, he announced his intention to run for the presidency in the 2019 general elections. Although he lost the PDP presidential nomination to Atiku Abubakar, Lamido’s influence in Nigerian politics remains undiminished. He continues to be a strong political voice, not only in Jigawa State and the North West geopolitical zone but across Nigeria.
