Former Bournemouth footballer Jordan Chiedozie is in a coma following a severe car accident. The 30-year-old, who is the son of ex-Tottenham winger John Okechukwu Chiedozie, currently plays for Bashley FC in the Southern League Division One.
The incident occurred as Chiedozie and club physio Reighan Taylor were returning from a weekend match at Tavistock. Their vehicle experienced a flat tyre on the M27 near Southampton, prompting them to pull over onto the hard shoulder. While inspecting the issue, they were struck by another car.
Chiedozie sustained multiple broken bones and other serious injuries and was rushed to Southampton Hospital, where he remains in a controlled coma. Taylor, who was unharmed physically, provided immediate first aid at the scene but has been left traumatized by the ordeal.
Bashley FC confirmed the incident in an official statement on Tuesday, describing Chiedozie’s injuries as “life-changing, and potentially life-threatening.” The driver of the other vehicle has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
The club has requested the postponement of their scheduled match against Thatcham Town, which the Southern League has approved. The statement added, “The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the club are with Jordan and his family, and of course with Reighan, at what is a difficult time for all connected with Bashley FC.”
Chiedozie, who joined Bournemouth’s academy in 2007, has played for over 15 clubs during his career. Bashley manager David Lewis expressed his deep concern, stating, “Everyone at the club is completely stunned by what happened, and our thoughts at the moment are far more with Jordan and his family, and with Reighan than they are with football.”
He added, “Jordan’s teammates are understandably in bits, and I am certain they would not want to play so soon after this terrible accident. We are in close touch with Jordan’s immediate family and will do all that we can to support them at this awful time.”
The football community has rallied around Chiedozie, with prayers and well-wishes pouring in for his recovery.
