Fresh Protests Rock Rano Over Dissolution of Emirate

On Monday, residents of Rano took to the streets to protest the Kano State Government’s decision to dissolve the Rano emirate.

Demonstrators condemned the actions of the state government and the state House of Assembly, carrying placards with various inscriptions and chanting anti-government slogans. Protesters alleged that the dissolution of the emirate was unjust and politically motivated.

The protests were sparked by the Kano State Government’s recent repeal of the Kano Emirates Council Law.

This law, previously used by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje to dethrone Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II in 2020, was annulled by the New Nigeria People’s Party-controlled House of Assembly last Thursday.

Governor Abba Yusuf, while assenting to the new legislation, announced the dissolution of four additional emirates created by Ganduje. These include Rano, Gaya, Karaye, and Bichi.

The governor also directed all the monarchs, including Alhaji Muhammadu Kabiru Inuwa, Emir of Rano, to hand over their positions to state Commissioner Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
