Akume Celebrates 25 Years of Nigerian Democracy with Hopeful Vision for Future

George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, marked Nigeria’s democratic journey as one filled with hope and resilience, reflecting on the past 25 years during the 2024 Democracy Day Public Lecture at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The lecture, themed “25 Years of Enduring Democracy: Prospects for the Future,” gathered participants to celebrate and evaluate the progress of Nigeria’s democratic governance, which has remained unbroken since its establishment.

In his address, Akume emphasized the importance of this milestone, urging attendees to remember the significant contributions and sacrifices of the nation’s heroes and heroines who fought tirelessly for democratic rule.

“This event provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the contributions and sacrifices of our national heroes and heroines who fought for the entrenchment of democratic rule in our dear country,” Akume stated.

“It also allows us, as a nation and as a government, to salute the courage and commitment of Nigerians for remaining steadfast and for believing in the values of democracy despite numerous challenges facing our nation and the West African sub-region as a whole.”
