Court Grants N10 Million Bail to #EndBadGovernance Protesters, Bars Public Rallies

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail of N10 million each to the ten #EndBadGovernance protesters charged with attempting to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu between July 1 and August 4 this year.

Justice Emeka Nwite approved the bail after considering their applications. Each defendant is required to provide a surety who must reside in Abuja, own property in the city, and submit the property documents to the court.

The sureties must also swear an affidavit of means, while both the defendants and their sureties must surrender their international passports and provide three recent passport photographs to the court.

In rejecting the objections of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Justice Nwite ordered the protesters not to participate in any public rallies during their trial. Until they meet their bail conditions, the defendants will remain in prison custody. The trial is set to begin on September 27.

The protesters are accused of treason for allegedly levying war against Nigeria during their one-week nationwide protests.

According to the charges, they attempted to overthrow the government, contrary to sections 96, 410, and 413 of the Penal Code. The IGP alleges that the accused persons broke into the Abacha Army Barracks, called for a military takeover of President Tinubu’s government, and attempted to storm the seat of power.

Additionally, they are accused of burning a police station, injuring officers, and destroying public property, including a High Court complex and National Communication Commission (NCC) facilities.

The accused individuals are Michael Tobiloba Adaramoye, Adeyemi Abiodun Abayomi, Suleiman Yakubu, Opaluwa Eleojo Simon, Angel Love Innocent, Buhari Lawal, Mosiu Sadiq, Bashir Bello, Nurudeen Khamis, and Abduldalam Zubair.
