How Much Does the U.S. President Make? Here’s the Surprising Truth

Many assume the U.S. president earns a hefty salary along with various allowances—after all, it’s the top job in one of the world’s most powerful nations. But the reality might surprise you.

The president’s role is technically that of a government employee, with a salary funded by taxpayers. President Joe Biden currently receives an annual salary of $400,000, a figure that has remained unchanged for years. This salary will be the same for the next president, whether it’s Kamala Harris, Donald Trump, or another candidate.

Interestingly, if Kamala Harris were to win, she would add her vice-presidential salary of $235,100 to her income until her term ends. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump famously donated his entire presidential salary every quarter during his four years in office. In 2020, for instance, he directed funds to departments focused on healthcare and COVID-19 relief efforts.

This salary structure reflects the principle that the president, though in a powerful role, serves as a public official, dedicated to the nation’s welfare rather than personal financial gain.
