Federal Government Allows Colleges of Education to Offer Degree Programs

ABUJA — The Federal Government has officially launched a new policy allowing Colleges of Education to independently offer both degree and National Certificate in Education (NCE) programs. This marks a significant reform, enabling these institutions to run full academic degree programs without needing to partner with universities.

Speaking at a summit in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, called the initiative a “historic milestone.” He stated that the reform, backed by the Federal Colleges of Education (Establishment) Act No. 43 of 2023, gives colleges “full legislative and operational authority” to expand their academic offerings.

Professor Paulinus Chijioke Okwelle, Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), highlighted that this new autonomy will revitalize teacher education and increase access for students. He noted that the degrees awarded by the colleges will hold the same value as those from traditional universities.

The Ministry of Education has committed to providing ongoing support and resources to ensure the successful implementation of this new dual-mandate system.
