The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), in collaboration with the Ndukwe Kalu Foundation (NKF), has launched a four-week Digital Rights Training targeting secondary school students in Kano State, including those with disabilities.
The training began on Wednesday at Government Girls College, Kano, and Government Girls Secondary School, Dukawuya, aims to build students’ knowledge of digital literacy and their rights online, such as the right to privacy, freedom of expression, and protection from cyber threats.
CITAD’s Training Officer, Kamilu Isah Ahmad, who spoke on behalf of the Project Officer, Mrs. Yesmin Salako, said the training comes at a time of growing internet usage and online risks. “We want students, including those with disabilities, to understand their digital rights and how to stay safe online,” he said.
He explained that the programme is part of a broader initiative taking place in Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, and the Federal Capital Territory, with a focus on inclusive and secure digital access. “Digital education and protection should be accessible to all,” he added.
Staff and students of the participating schools attended the launch. Over the next four weeks, students are expected to receive lessons on basic internet use, digital communication tools, cyber threats, and online safety practices.
The Principal of Government Girls College, Kano, Hajiya Hauwa Nuhu Wali, acknowledged the training, saying it addresses critical issues affecting young people. “This is timely. Our students need to be aware of online risks and opportunities,” she said.
She called on other organisations to consider similar interventions, especially those aimed at female students. “Girls are often more vulnerable in digital spaces. We need more of these efforts,” she added.
A student from Dukawuya, Amina Yusuf, said she looked forward to the training. “I want to learn how to use the internet better and protect myself,” she said.
