Deputy Senate President Commends Tinubu Over New University Establishment

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing legislation that converts Federal Polytechnic Kabo into the Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo, in Kano State.

The presidential correspondence regarding the establishment of three new universities in Kano, Akwa Ibom, and Oyo states was read during Tuesday’s Senate session, presided over by Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio.

Senator Barau, who originally sponsored the bill for the polytechnic’s conversion, described the development as evidence of President Tinubu’s commitment to expanding access to higher education and accelerating national development through youth skill development.

In a statement released by his media adviser, Ismail Mudashir, the Deputy Senate President emphasized education’s fundamental role in societal progress.

“As we all know, youths are the cornerstones of the development of all societies. The conversion of the Polytechnic to the University of Science and Technology aligns with global best practices,” Senator Barau said.

He highlighted the importance of human capital development in today’s economy, noting Nigeria’s large youth population as a strategic advantage that requires proper educational investment.

“Globally, ICT and science-related disciplines, such as artificial intelligence, robotics, cybersecurity, and so on, are on the front burner. It’s through this kind of institution that we can train our youths in these fields,” the senator explained.

The new university represents part of a broader federal initiative to establish specialized institutions focused on science and technology education across different regions of the country.

Senator Barau extended congratulations to the management, staff, students, and surrounding communities of the former Federal Polytechnic Kabo on the institution’s elevation to university status.

The conversion is expected to enhance educational opportunities in northern Nigeria while providing specialized training in high-demand technical fields that align with global industry trends.
